In February 2026, Myanmar’s political and conflict dynamics reflected intensifying contestations over political legitimacy in the heartland of the country. Internal grievances within NUG became more visible with controversy over the case of the Prime Minister’s Office and protests by CDM forces. The surrender of the BNRA leader to Tatmadaw further raised concerns about trust and internal coordination among resistance actors. In late February, NUG announced the closure of tax-collection checkpoints in four districts of Sagaing. Meanwhile, the regime moved to formalise post-election control and escalated ground and aerial offensives, while civilians continued facing grave risks, including landmines.
