Sitrep

  • On August 24, NUG issued a statement, mentioning Tatmadaw’s planned election as a “sham” designed to entrench its power and shield perpetrators of war crimes.
  • On August 22, NUCC also released its political stance to achieve a common political agreement with anti-Tatmadaw groups, highlighting that the Federal Transitional Charter (AFTA) must be drafted, ratified, and promulgated at the earliest possible time.
  • On August 26, KNU also announced that anyone involved in Tatmadaw-organized elections will face action, including warnings, detention, or exile, since the elections would not be the solution to Myanmar’s crisis, but only to prolong the dictatorship.
  • On August 27, the negotiation between Tatmadaw and the TNLA in Kuming reportedly failed, while the former rejected the TNLA offer to withdraw from two key towns, Kyaukme and Hsipaw. Instead, Tatamdaw insisted on to return of all twelve TNLA captured towns, captured during the 1027 Operation.
  • During the last week of August, Tatmadaw and its allied forces are reportedly doing pre-election measures, such as plans for advance voting and voting awareness, while repressive measures are reported for those against the elections.
  • Conflicts are reportedly intense between Tatmadaw and resistance forces in townships, namely, Natogyi, Tamu, Monywa, Ayardaw, among others, resulting in thousands of civilians being forced into displacement.
  • As of August 28, Tatmadaw’s airstrikes and artillery attacks reportedly were conducted in Myingyan, Nahtogyi, and Puak townships, among others, killing civilians, children, and damaging homes and hospitals.
  • After five months of earthquake since March 28, survivors in Mandalay are still trying to rebuild on their own, while dead bodies continue to be recovered from collapsed buildings, according to local sources.
